Chembra Peak: The beauty of Wayanad

 

 

Wayanad can be thought of an ideal place for adventure. Chembra peak, the highest peak in Wayanad is the natural choice for most of the visitors. It is an ideal spot for trekking and mountaineering. Trekking to top of the Chembra peak is a day long experience. It is a very beautiful spot close to Western Ghats. It gives you a bird’s eye view of Wayanad, from top of the peak which is very thrilling and awesome.

        
Chembra peak, which is the most thrilling place in Wayanad, is located 14 kms west of Kalpetta on the way to Ooty road. Located amidst panoramic surroundings, the peak is at an altitude of 2100 meters above sea level. You can access Meppady hills and Chembra peak from Kalpetta. The entire surrounding is quite with tea plantation, flora and fauna, beautiful birds and some wild life.

 

A destination for trekkers as well as nature lovers, some tourists stay one or two days at the top of the peak in temporary camps. The temperature really falls down at the top of the peak. To climb the peak, you need to get permits from forest department office at Meppady village. District Tourism Promotion Council provides guides, sleeping bags, canvass huts trekking implements on hire charges to the tourists. To reach Chembra, take the Kozhikode road from Kalpetta and turn left just after the town. You will hit Meppady village after a short drive where you can get your necessary permits, ask for directions to just confirm and proceed. Start early, since the trek up and back will take six hours or more.

At 2100 meters Chembra stands taller than the next biggest peak Mullayangiri, the tallest in
Karnataka.
If you are the kind who love destination than the journey, then for you
Chembra is nourished with a heart shaped lake at the top of the peak.
This lake is named  
hrudaya sarass (hrudaya means heart and sarass means lake)
. This lake which awaits you
at the top of the peak never dries up even in very dry summer. It looks like a miracle for nature

lovers.

Camping in the night with campfire, and the whispering of the flowing springs leaves an ever

lasting memories in mind of visitors and rejuvenate you.

 

Chembra is located near Meppady (Meppady), 11kms off NH212 (Kollegal – Mysore – Kozhikode).
For people who prefer public transport, KSRTC (both Kerala & Karnataka) and a lot of private
companies operate overnight deluxe and fast passenger buses between Kozhikode (aka Calicut)

and Bangalore. At Chundale (about 6kms past Kalpetta, 5 kms before Vythiri and 62kms before Kozhikode), one has to take a deviation to the

left. People taking buses can get down at Kalpetta and catch another bus to Meppady. Meppady is 11kms from Chundale, in the

SH29, connecting Chundale to the Tamil Nadu border and from there to Pandalur, Gudalur and Ooty.
